Just before Christmas, I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with the Irish Independent about one of my favourite topics — How to shop the Christmas sales like a pro –12 things that will save you time and money. Whether it’s the post- Christmas sales, Black Friday, January clear-outs or a sneaky mid-season sale, I believe that with a little bit of know-how, anyone can become a savvy shopper.
Here’s a little more from what I shared in that interview — plus a few extra tips just for you!
How Can You Tell if Something Is a Genuine Deal?
Let’s be real — just because there’s a red sticker saying “SALE” doesn’t mean it’s actually a bargain.
Here’s what I always recommend:
💡 Be price aware.
Under EU law, when a retailer shows a “Was/Now” discount, the “Was” price must be the price it was sold at at least 30 days prior. Sneaky, right? Because what some shops do is quietly raise prices 30+ days before a sale… only to “slash” them right back down.
🔍 Track prices in advance.
A month before sales kick off, take a screenshot of items you’re eyeing up. When the sale starts, compare the new price to your saved one. Sometimes it’s the same price — or worse!
🛒 Use tools like CamelCamelCamel.com (for Amazon UK shoppers) to check a product’s full price history. It’s a game-changer.
Don’t Just Trust the Tag — Compare, Compare, Compare
One site’s “bargain” is another’s full price. Always compare prices across a few trusted websites before clicking “Add to Cart”.
✨ And don’t forget the extras — delivery costs, customs charges, and returns policies all add up and should be part of your decision.
A Quick Scam-Check List ✅
-
Stick to websites you know and trust.
-
Always check reviews on Trustpilot.
-
If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
The Three Questions to Ask Before You Buy on Sale
-
Do I actually need it?
-
Is it genuinely a good deal?
-
Can I realistically afford it right now?
Impulse buys can feel like wins in the moment but lead to regret later (trust me… I once bought silver Dr. Martens as a teen. Wore them five times and still hear about it from my parents!).
My Sales Prep Routine – What I Do Before Every Big Sale
📝 Make a list & set a budget.
I recommend using Revolut Vaults to set aside money throughout the year just for sale season. It helps me stay on track and not go wild in the sales.
🔍 Do your research.
Know your prices before the sales start. This is how you spot the real bargains.
📉 Think cost-per-wear or use.
A €100 coat worn 50 times is a better buy than a €20 top worn once.
My Favourite Sale Buys
There’ve been loads, but a few standouts include:
-
🧥 River Island coats and jackets — amazing quality and major reductions.
-
👟 Veja runners I snagged for under €60 (possibly a price glitch but hey, I’ll take it!).
-
🍟 Our Ninja Dual Airfryer — my Mum picked it up on sale two years ago and it’s still the most-used item in our kitchen.
More Tips to Maximise Your Savings
🕓 Shop out of season — winter coats in summer, sandals in winter.
🛍️ Key sales to watch out for:
-
Black Friday (November)
-
Post-Christmas Sales
-
Mid-season and End-of-Season Sales
💌 Sign up to retailer newsletters for exclusive offers.
🛒 Leave items in your cart — you might get a cheeky discount email!
💸 Use cashback & discount code sites like Coupert, Honey, or Revolut.
Sometimes you can stack codes — yes, even on sale items!
And of course, you’ll find loads of active discount codes and sales on my website Salesavvy.ie, and I share daily deals on my Instagram @salesavvyireland.
Shopping the sales isn’t just about snagging a deal — it’s about making sure the deal is real, and that it fits your budget, lifestyle, and values.
