Maternity Style: My Top Picks for Fashionable & Affordable Bump-Friendly Buys

A lovely follower messaged me recently looking for maternity fashion tips — so if you’re not currently expecting, feel free to scroll on! But if you are shopping with a bump (or shopping for someone who is), keep reading, because I’ve pulled together all my go-to recommendations in one handy blog post. I’ve had two children, and I tried to look as stylish as possible without breaking the bank throughout both pregnancies.

Where to Shop Maternity Online

There are so many more maternity fashion options these days compared to when I had my kids. When I was pregnant, I used to really struggle to find stylish and affordable maternity clothes. My trusty go-tos were ASOS and Seraphine — but thankfully, the selection has come a long way since then.

Here are my favourite websites for great quality, well-priced maternity wear:

  • ASOS – Huge variety across multiple brands. A one-stop shop with loads of stylish maternity options.

  • River Island – On-trend pieces with a good range of sizing.

  • Very – Great for basics and pyjamas.

  • H&M – They have a huge range of affordable basics, casual wear and some dressier pieces too.

  • Next – Quality staples and a good workwear selection.

  • Seraphine – My absolute fave and the brand I wore the most in both my pregnancies. Their dresses are so lovely for work or special occasions – but just a heads-up, they now come with customs charges so be sure to factor that in to the cost and be sure to shop during their sales to make it worthwhile!

Don’t Be Afraid to Shop Outside the Maternity Section

One tip I always share: you don’t have to stick to official maternity ranges. Floaty dresses that are cinched under the bust work just as well, especially if the fabric is stretchy or if you simply size up. I lived in these styles when I was pregnant! Non-maternity clothing is often cheaper too.

My Top 6 Maternity Must-Haves

Here are the pieces I couldn’t have done without during pregnancy (and let’s be honest — in those few months after too!):

  1. Over-the-bump jeans
Forget the under-the-bump ones — they just roll down once your belly pops so you wear them for such a short time. A stylish, comfy pair of over-the-bump jeans is a lifesaver and you’ll still wear them for months after the baby arrives.

  2. Floaty dresses (cinched under the bust)
Perfect for summer days and easy to dress up or down. These are also great to help you feel put-together with minimal effort.

  3. Wrap dresses
These were my go-to especially for work! Comfortable, flattering, work-appropriate, and easy to throw on with tights and boots for winter.

  4. Over-the-bump leggings
You’ll live in these! Get a good quality pair that holds up to constant wear.

  5. Wrap/breastfeeding tops
Ideal for pregnancy and especially handy postpartum if you’re breastfeeding.

  6. A long cardigan
For pure comfort… cosy and comfortable, and goes well with jeans, or leggings.

Pregnancy style doesn’t have to be boring or expensive. With a few key pieces and the right sites to shop, you can absolutely feel stylish and comfortable all the way through (and that bit beyond!).
